Giftedness is a Journey, Let’s Take it Together
If you’re like me, you probably follow at least 5 state or national organizations dedicated to gifted social, emotional, and academic growth. If there’s anything that all of these organizations and so many others make clear it’s that Giftedness is a journey, not a destination. From childhood to adulthood and every moment in between, giftedness shapes how many see and understand the world around them. Some people are able to embrace their giftedness while others learn at an early age to hide parts of themselves that make them different than their peers. Many know they are different, but might not know why. Here at Central Florida Gifted Center we believe in more than inclusion; we believe in celebrating what makes each and every client and family special.
Being gifted can come with some great feelings like falling down a rabbit hole researching a topic of interest or solving a difficult puzzle no one else seems to understand. It can also come with intense and complex feelings that can be hard to regulate. One thing is for sure, as children grow into adolescence and then into teenage and young adulthood the challenges of being Gifted don’t stop; even though educational services often do.
Here in Florida direct services for Gifted students often start and end with elementary school. As students transition to middle and high school their services become consultative; meaning someone checks in on them and makes sure they’re in academically appropriate classes. But what about all of those social and emotional needs? Did they disappear over the summer before 6th grade? Probably not. That’s why we provide more than just Gifted assessment. We believe students need comprehensive services through graduation to prepare them for the next step in their journey.
